Walking in darkness was the perfect punishment for a man like him. Mark couldn’t believe what had happened at Sugar Camp. He refused to look back, even though every fiber of his being wanted to know if Evelyn stormed away or waited.

What had he done?

Though he may have stopped short of kissing her lips, he’d left her with little doubt of where his thoughts lay. This was a relationship he knew he couldn’t pursue. And if his actions somehow became an obstacle to her finding Christ…

God, forgive me.

The words seemed so insufficient.

And what about Paige? What had he done? He was a fool. The truth in stark terms.

He knew better. The Bible was clear. Do not be unequally yoked. That had to apply to all stages of a relationship or it had no meaning at all. He tore his hat off and slapped it against his thigh, before shoving it back on his head.

When he reached home, he hoped he’d escape notice and slip away to his room. However, a light in the living room beckoned him. His father sat in his chair, paper in hand.

“Welcome home, son.”

“Father.” Mark sank into the matching chair on the other side of the fireplace.

Father eyed him over the top of the paper before folding it and setting it to the side. “What’s bothering you?”

Mark searched for words. How to explain without his father becoming disgusted with him? “How did you know mother was the woman you wanted to spend the rest of your life with?”

A wry chuckle erupted from Father. “Does this mean you think Paige is the woman for you?”

“Yes…no…maybe…I don’t know.” Mark ran his fingers through his hair. “It’s…complicated.”

“Must be. Probably by a certain woman we’ve come to know.”

“Maybe.” Mark groaned. “But there’s a problem.”

“A pretty big one.”

“I should focus on Paige, but I don’t know. Something is missing.”

“Love is more than fireworks, son.”

“But shouldn’t that be part of it? Shouldn’t there be an element of feeling like this woman is the most amazing person in the world and you want to be worthy of her affection?”

Father leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “But if she doesn’t share your faith…”

“I know.” Mark stood, and paced with his hands in his pockets as he worked to moderate his voice. “I can’t forget that fact no matter how I try. This woman who challenges me and intrigues me doesn’t share the most important thing in my life. And I don’t know what to do about it.

“I can speak to your mother about not inviting Miss Happ over for Sunday lunches anymore.”

“No.” Mark shook his head. “I wouldn’t rob her of the friendship. She enjoys it too much.”

“Your mother?”

“Evelyn.”

“What happened tonight?”

“Why?”

“You don’t get upset in general unless something specific has happened.”

Mark blinked, wishing he had a means of escape, but honesty required nothing less than the truth. “Evelyn and I went to dinner tonight after we got off. It had been a long, frustrating day. She asked me to join her, and I agreed.
